mac systems preferences problem

In the Systems Preferences of my MacBook Pro, it shows an old/incorrect email address/AppleID, although the updated AppleID appears elsewhere in iCloud settings and on my iPhone. How can I correct the old address without getting the prompt message to "access account information enter password for AppleID (then gives old address/ID) to change password. I end up changing the actual PW for my current AppleID, which I don't want to do. I simply want to update the old listed address on the Mac Systems Preferences. Help?
