How do I erase my 2011 iMac that has a bad vide...

I'm preparing to sell my old 2011 iMac that has a bad video card.  I need to erase the hard drive but not sure how to do this.  I can boot up in target mode to my new iMac.  Occasionally I can get the old iMac to boot completely but it only stays on for about 2 minutes then the screen blanks again.

You have 2 options, if you have another Mac available you can connect them via Target Disk Mode and erase. The other method is to remove the HD from the 2011 and then either destroy it or put it in an enclosure and using another Mac re-format it.

Once I erase it, how do I get Sierra back on there so the new owner has an operating system?

Try starting up in Safe Mode and see if it will stay on, so that you can Erase and Reinstall.

If not, you can use Target Disk Mode to access and Wipe the old iMac's Hard Drive.

Additionally if you can reinstall, you must reinstall the original OS X and let the new owner upgrade using their account ID..... What to do before you sell or give away your Mac - Apple Support

Thank you, Once I erase it, how do I get Sierra back on there so the new owner has an operating system?

You can not, you must reinstall the original OS X that can on that computer and let the new owner upgrade to Sierra using their own account ID.....  see > What to do before you sell or give away your Mac - Apple Support
