iTunes and Apple ID

Am using MacBook Pro with retina display. It's up to date and I can't sign into my iTunes account. I get the repeated message "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server". Definitely typing the password correctly and the ID works everywhere else. Rather annoying. Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.
