What is the Archive folder in Mail and why is i...

I have this Archive folder in Mail that appears to be synced with my gmail accounts.  Delete from either gmail inbox and it's deleted from the archive and vice versa.  Is this normal?

It seems normal if your gmail account is set up using IMAP (which is the default).
