Mac Pro 2010 model, suddenly flickered, showed monitor screen lines, Sierra 10.12 won't show desktop

The Mac Pro 2010 model is a 42lb silver tower with a separate graphics card. which model graphics card do you have Installed? you may need a new(er) one.

Hi Susan,

It might just be some dirt on one of the bus lines, if you are lucky.

• Switch off your Mac.
• Remove the power cord and also the display cable connected to the graphics card.
• Open the side panel.
• Earth yourself to the frame of the Mac to ensure that you are statically discharged.
• Remove the graphics card.
• Use a pencil rubber and clean the edge connector carefully on both sides of the card. Don't touch these edge connector strips with your hand. Ensure that you only handle the graphics card carefully on the outside edge only.
• Use a tin of compressed air and blow out the dirt in the slot that you used for the graphic connector.
• Ensure that you properly discharge any static to the frame of the Mac.
• Insert the card in the slot, making sure that it is seated properly.
• Reconnect the cables.
• Power on the Mac and test.

If you are lucky, the problem should be solved. If not, it is time to replace the graphics card.

Thank you. One other thing that came up was that I might need a driver update for this card.

Driver upgrade for AMD Radeon 5770 Graphics Card. I have been looking everywhere for this and the AMD site details do not fit my search.

Any ideas? I am not even sure they make one. Thank you

"Update the Driver" is a solution from Windows. It indicates that you need to strongly question the source of that advice.

The driver for the 5770 has been included in every version of MacOS that could run that card, and there have never been any outside updates.

The 5770 is a good basic card that is readily available. The Mac-firmware version has been fairly trouble free. Although yours seem to have died, these are still longer-lived (in general) than many of the cards shipped in slightly older Mac Pro models.

You can also run many PC-card versions of the 5770 and other cards, but may not get any Startup or Debug or similar screens. In addition, more high-end card may have higher power demands and require special wiring.

You could also look for a 5870. Do you have a way to test whether the monitor or the cable connecting it to your Mac Pro might be wonky? Might be good to rule that out before spending money on another graphics card.

I could not connect my 27 inch cinema display to the cylinder mac pro or my personal 2015 MacBook Pro (thunderbolt 2) in the art dept yesterday to test it. This is an important diagnosis! I called Apple and they said I might need to go from a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter sold at the Apple store. Not near a store, I let this one go for now.

Apple could not tell me how to hook it up to the cylinder Mac Pro either. I did not feel confident in their advice.

The usual way Apple stuff works is, "It just works". You connect the things that seem like they should work, and all is well.

That is NOT the case with ThunderBolt-2 adapter (from a USB-C/ThunderBolt-3 computer). This adapter has a specific disclaimer that it does NOT produce a usable DisplayPort signal !!

Mac Pro mid 2010 problem of not booting video still happening.

I replaced the graphics card with the same model, we replaced the power supply and the mother plane. It still won't let the monitor come on. I tested the monitor at home on a 2012 Mac Pro and the monitor works fine.

WE are looking for a real pro to diagnosis this. It was running Sierra and crashed in Acrobat. 32 gb ram.
