Which headset for iMac (mid2011)?

I am looking for a compatible headset for an iMac - I need one for work.

I've tried the line in ports individually (the 3.5mm jack), then I tried using an adaptor that combines the mic & headphones into one.  I can hear through the headphones,  but the mic does not transmit my voice.  I have adjusted the settings for the software.  Then I discovered that I probably need a preamp for the mic as it's just an audio line-in port, or find a USB headset.  I am using OS Sierra. 

Has anyone had any experience of this - can anyone recommend a headset (at a reasonable price)?  I really appreciate your help.
