Clicking noise and slow performance in 2012 Mac...

My MacBook Pro (mid 2012, 2.9ghz i7, 8gb ram, intel 4000 HD) has recently developed a clicking noise that occurs every 5 seconds consistently. Along with this the Mac has started to act very slow and takes time to process certain requests, for instance while using GarageBand a notification appeared saying "system overload" and the programme froze for around 10 seconds. That is the first time in about 7 months of using GarageBand that it has happened. Even just browsing the web has become rather slow and YouTube videos have problems loading and take a while for the page to render. 

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
