Not able to import photos due to "insufficiant ...

I have a 2015 Macbook pro that I use almost entirely for photos. When I try to import photos from an sd card the message "Insufficient Disk Space - Additional 34.68 GB of free space is needed to continue....." pops up. Yet when i go to manage disk space, it tells me I have almost 130 GB of free space left. I've had this happen before, and I solved it by importing in small batches, yet when I try that now it does not work! Even if I try to upload 1 single photo it fails and pops up the same message but with something like 100 MB instead of 34 GB. Also, I cannot dowload or upload to or from my iCloud, which I am paying for 2TB of space and still have 1.75TB of free space. If anyone has any potential solutions that will allow me to solve this problem safely without risk of losing any photos on my Macbook it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

I have this same problem... Mid 2014 Macbook Pro with 176GB left out of 500 on the flash drive, and over 1.75TB left in icloud storage, yet I can't import 10GB of videos?
