I backed up my husbands phone to my iCloud and ...

My husband told me he couldn't take anymore pictures. He is not very technical and so I thought if I backed up his phoneto my iCloud it would give him some space to take more pictures. Instead, it deleted all of his contacts and gave him all of mine. How do I get his contacts back if he had never backed up his phone?
