Files disappearing completely

My Jpges stopped appearing on my desktop. After reading a number of forum posts I discovered they were in one of my Drop Box folders. I changed Drop Box preference setting and that fixed the problem temporarily. The machine is a 5 or 6 year old 27" imac

I bought a new 27" imac just a few weeks ago (August 2017). Jpegs started disappearing from that machine as well but for a time I was able to locate them using Spotlight Search. But then Pdf's began disappearing as well and I can't find them with search.

Now the new machine has starting shutting down without warning. It's not hot. The old machine used to get very hot but never shut down. I managed to restart it a number of times but now it's not responding.

So I started using the old machine again. But now everything has disappeared from the desktop. Everything.

If I click on System Preferences I get the iCloud menu. I have never used icloud and don't want to use it.

Any ideas out there?

I'm running OSX Sierra 10.12.4 on both machines.

It looks like you may have accidentally turned on the option to store the desktop and documents folders in icloud.

Click icloud in a Finder window sidebar and see if you have a Documents folder and a Desktop folder there.

If you do, copy their contents to a folder on your mac - not to Documents or Desktop- and then turn that option off in System Preferences->iCloud

Thanks Luis, I managed to reboot the old machine with the shift key down and my desktop items have come back including jpegs and pdf's. Still can't reboot the new machine to test your suggestion on that one. Looks like she'll have to go back to the shop.
