Why does some messages not show in Message app?

The Message app syncing with the iPhones messages are great. However how come some message threads does not show in the message list?

Example: I have sent messages to a particular mobile number, last message in thread sent September 4:th. Looking at the message list in the Mac message app there is no trace of any messages at this date (or before). But when I type in a keyword in the search field the message thread show up instantly. Why does I need to search for it to show?

In this particular case the recipient was not in my address book so finding the "right" keyword was a little problematic, however I knew I had the contact a couple of weeks ago so it should be possible to find it chronologically without searching. The issue happened to me before as well. Any suggestions for making ALL message threads showing in the Message app?
