Copy TimeMachine Backup runs for days

I have a 1GB of backups of my iMac 2011, i7 3.4 running MacOS 10.12.6 going back 4 years. Since the drive is getting old, I want to transfer the backups to a new drive. Both drives are connected directly to the iMac, the old 1GB through USB 2.0 and the new 4GB through FW800. Apple has a support page Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup drive to a new backup drive - Apple Support.

When I followed their advice using the Finder as prescribed, it took extreme long (more than a day), the Finder stopped at "preparing  to copy 1,457,734 files", and my iMac stopped working. I stopped that process.

I then used Disk Utility to restore the new drive from the old. The restoring ran for 5 days and now the verifying is already running for 3 days while the progress bar is locked in the middle.

Any ideas on how to really transfer a TimeMachine backup with millions of files?
