Can I have an Apple ID and an iCloud connection...

Can I have an Apple ID and an iCloud connection that are different accounts? I wish to maintain them separately, but have access to same iCloud files. I use one account on my MacBook (which is also on my wife's and our family machines -- another iMac and iPad and phone) and a completely different one on my iPad. I want to have one iCloud storage to maintain files that I can access on both and my iPhone.

I have successfully used family sharing to make it so the calendars and pics all work together. But not my files for Pages, Numbers, Keynote... Plus, I don't want to have to pay for extra storage on two different accounts if I don't need the space in total.

In order to access/share data in iCloud, all devices/computers must be signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID.

Apple ID account is your iCloud account. They’re not separate. You can have more than one Apple ID for one person, but that creates multiple, serious complications. Use the controls on what gets synced to what device available in Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Drive and leave it at that.

FWIW, when iOS 11 is introduced in the Fall, iCloud storage will be shared with all Family Share members.

Thank you... An Apple support person had told me I could get access to both iCloud storage folders. I have tried everything without success. Your note saying that iOS 11 will give shared access make me satisfied to wait.  THANKS.

You can, but not at the same time. You’d need to log out of one account, then log into the other one. Hence my advice to stay clear of such arrangements.

Golden rules:

- Each person has their own Apple ID;

- One Apple ID per person.
