Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group (see Note 1 below). Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Note 1: The information you provided does not indicate the macOS version, which when taken with the other symptoms you describe strongly supports the likelihood of hard disk corruption. The instructions for deleting a user or group generally apply to macOS versions earlier than Sierra though.

Note 2: There is a high correlation between premature disk failure and the use of non-Apple disk "utilities", "helpers", drive "managers" and similarly categorized "maintenance" utilities. "Cocktail" and the Western Digital "helpers" are among them.

Although they are not likely to cause hard disk drive failure directly, non-Apple "anti-virus" products are all junk that will prevent your Mac from working properly. Uninstall such things in strict accordance with their instructions.

Hi PhitOtter:

It is hard to say whether the Avast and AVG are causing any problems. I would remove them. But it sounds like your problem may be the SATA cable or possible your hard drive.

To test whether the problem is your hard drive or SATA cable:

You can remove your hard drive from Mac and install in an external enclosure OWC external case or using a USB to SATA adapter USB to SATA adapter and connect it to your MBP via USB. And then try to boot from it using Startup Manager. This will help to identify if your hard drive or SATA cable are at fault. If it boots the MBP, most likely the problem will be the drive SATA cable needs to be replaced.

Hello John

Thanks for your suggestions.  My system is running Sierra  OS 10.12.5

--First and foremost I have backed up my system after each step and have set my new external HD as the default "go to" for Time Machine back ups.

--Second I have removed the apps which were classified as...non-Apple disk "utilities", "helpers", drive "managers" and similarly categorized "maintenance" utilities.

WD Security.

Avast and all its' programs and Cocktail have been removed.Yet some of these apps are still showing up in the EtreCheck reports.  No increase in speed found.

(One question  however presented itself while doing all of this.......

Is macFuse another program I should remove as a part of the above "unnecessary helper?")

--Third, I performed the SAFE MODE reboot after deletion but found the same slow performance issue as b4... the system was just as sluggish and continued at an average of 10-15 min   start up time.

Instead of creating a new user account,  I went into an already existing user account and found the system just as sluggish and long on the start up. Yet I found something that concerned me.

When I opened up Safari browser it opened to show only one quarter of the Safari screen. If I waited a few seconds too long b4 attempting to push the green maximize button the rotating beachball would start and I couldn't do anything with the screen. I could only close it by a force quit.....After a few times of this I tried to press the max button b4 the beachball started and it worked. Once maximized, I had full control of the browser window. BTW this only happens in this one user account all other users don't have this issue (just slow performance)

Is this possibly an indication of some bigger problem?

In reading one of the links on troubleshooting in SAFE MODE it said to look at incompatible login items as a possible culprit. I deleted them which low and behold  the system did show a huge increase in startup speed. Average of 5min instead of 10-15mins. Which is much better then b4 but marginal at best.

But other concerns remain besides the Safari browser issue in that one user's account as I've noted below....

To address your comment that there could be a possibility of an impending disk failure I run Disk Utility ..... First Aid on the Start up disk and received this reply:

"First Aid found corruption. Use First Aid from recovery disk to fix"

But I don't have the recovery disk..... is there anything else I can do ?

Below is the latest EtreCheck report.....any other suggestions u can offer?
