key function gone after upgrade to Sierra

My machine is 12-inch new MacBook, serial number C0*******GF84. After upgrade to Sierra 10.12, the function keys on the top row of the keyboard (media keys, volume controls, keyboard backlight, screen brightness...etc) lost their function!

Have you checked the System Preferences > Keyboard? In the "Keyboard" tab of the panel, how is the option "Use all F1, F2, etc Function Keys as standard function keys" set?  If it is on, disable it.

What else have you already tried with Apple Support, so we can avoid suggsting things you already tried?

You should then take a genius appointment at your nearest Apple Store so they can run some advanced tests to figure out what's wrong.

I have the same issue after the same update, I don't think it's an isolated issue.

I am having the same issue.

I remap a selection of F-keys in Adobe InDesign to have certain functions.

For example: F3 is previous spread and F4 is next spread.

The F4 key loses function in InDesign and in the Finder too.

If I make a key-combination of ctrl-F4 I can see in keyboard-panel that the key is not broken

so it must be a software-issue.

I found a solution to trash the user/lbrary/preferences/com.apple.HIToolbox.plist which works for a while

but after using the F4 after a while its function is lost again.

I just upgraded my Macbook Pro to Sierra and at first my function keys didn't work.

Only the volume, but not "Show dashboard" "Application windows" and so on.

But I found a solution.

System Preferences -> Mission Control and set the keystrokes again.

For some reason they change after upgrading.

Just go to System Preferences->Keyboard->Keyboard and UNcheck "Use all F1, F2 etc as standard function keys".

that worked!!!  I have been struggling with this for months, resetting pram, etc.  THANK YOU!!!
