Mirroring iMac and Macbook Pro

I'd like to use my old 20-inch, Early 2009 iMac (OS X 10.9.5) as an additional monitor to my Macbook Pro (macOS Sierra 10.12.6).

I bought these two cables/adaptors:

• Mini Displayport (male) to HDMI (male)

• Mini Displayport (male) to HDMI (female)

Both computers do not detect the additional display when I open System Preferences > Displays. Even after holding down the 'alt' or 'option' key and clicking 'Detect Displays', the screens are not detected and arrangement does not come up.

I've tried plugging the Mini Displayport into the iMac and HDMI into the MBP. I've also tried connecting the two HDMI male and female cables together and then plugging both Mini Displayport male cables into the iMac and one into the MBP (into the thunderbolt sockets).

Both computers are connected to the same Wireless network.

Can anything think of a solution?

Sorry it's not going to work. This is a common question, however your iMac is simply too old. Please read Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support it will describe which Macs will work and the necessary connections.

Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news.
