Mac Mail: automatically choose best account
Since upgrading to macOS Sierra, the Mac Mail program has a different behaviour for choosing the "from"-account for sending emails.
Previously, you could choose "Send new messages from: Account of selected mailbox", which worked great for me, but now this option is no longer available. Instead, you have to choose "Send new messages from: Automatically select best account".
Now, Mac Mail chooses the "from"-account randomly and I have to check every email, if it chose the correct account... this is very annoying and error-prone and I do not see the point of it.
Is there any workaround or fix to go back to the old method? Thanks!
I agree. Very annoying.
This in fact works just as the old one used to - provided that you have selected a mailbox which is *specific to one account*.
For example, if the Inbox for a specific account is selected (rather than the whole Inbox), and you create a new message, it will use that account.
In the image, you can see I have the Inbox for my gmail account selected. With this, any new message will use that account; and if select my iCloud account, that is what is used, and so on.
Now if I were to select Inbox altogether, then there is no way to determine what account should be used, is it?
Hi Luis,
thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, this is not the case anymore since the upgrade to macOS Sierra.
It might happen to work in some cases, but it is not guaranteed that the selected inbox will be used to send messages. Instead, the "best account" is automatically selected by the mail program, which can also be a different account than the selected one. This is exactly the problem that I am talking about.
Sorry, I cannot reproduce the problem you are describing in my mac.
It is working correctly for me.
In previous versions of OSX:
- When you had not chosen a specific Inbox, then the new message would use the account of the selected message.
Now:
- If you are in specific acounts inbox, then new message uses that account. No problem.
- If you are not in any specific inbox, the program pretty randomly uses the "best" account for a new message. NOT the account of the selected message. This is the problem. It makes working with several accounts a lot more complicated.
Hi _hon_tas,
how do I select a specific accounts inbox so that it is used for the new message?
I always choose the account inbox on the left under "mailboxes", but that doesn't work. Thanks!
Under the "general" Inbox there should be the list of all individual accounts' inboxes, that you have. Just click on any one of them.
If the individual account's inboxes are not showing, you should first click on the little gray triangle on the left side of the "general" Inbox.
Hope this helps.
I have to get back to this for a little detail.
Even if I have a specific inbox chosen, the Mail program may choose to change the account randomly, when I paste a email address on a new message.
Oh man.
That's exactly what I meant.
The mail program seems to choose the outbox depending on the recipient now. Where is the point in that??
This is really annoying and also dangerous, especially if you are also using shared mail accounts in a team ...
Hello !
Some changes have been done in Mac OS Sierra regarding mails .
Please open mail and take cursor on top menu bar click on file > new viewer window .
Again click on window > merge all windows , now tab windows will be seen in mail , you can drag and drop from left to right and vice versa
To delete the tab click on cross sign of any one you desire .
To , bring back to the old method as you stated in your question again click file and close window ( can also use command + W ) .
Thanks !

Oh man.
I see now. I got the same thing. Command-N to open a new mail, and then just by typing or pasting a destination address does sometimes switch to a different account as the sender.
If it is a deliberate attempt to figure out which account I want to use, or just a bug, I'd prefer not to have this.
This is a default process since Sierra, Often the account defaults to @icloud. If you're not actively using other accounts or using them rarely, you can go to mail "preferences..@accounts.." where there will be a list of your accounts. highlight an account and you can enable or disable it. Works well both ways.
Using about a dozen accounts (work and personal) this new default process is a total pain.
It would be not problem, if they still had the old way possible as an option, but no.
Totally silly.
I have this same problem, it's ridiculous.
I only found the problem when I sent an email from a Virgin Media account and the receiver clicked 'Reply' and the returning email went to my Gmail account.
I have an old Hotmail account that I use when I don't trust the account to which I sending the email, my Virgin Media account is only for people I know I can trust. I don't want Apple Mail sending a mail from my VM account when I wanted to send it from my Hotmail account, for example. This could give my trusted email address to an untrusted source. This is a security problem and Apple need to fix it soon.
I realise that I can change the 'From' account back to the VM account after I enter the 'To' field, but that's not the point. This bug introduces another step that I have to remember to complete or give my secure email address to an untrusted source.
Why did Apple do this? Everything was fine in El Capitan and previous OS's.
