ipad updated itself and now wants a 6

Woke up this morning to my ipad asking for a 6-digit password I've never set and "Press home to finish setting up iOS 11.0.1". This is an update I was purposfully avoiding and did not initiate - though I admit that if Apple just prompted it to the first person who opened it up, my illiterate 3-year-old may have initiated it.

What is this 6-digit password? How do I get into my ipad? I never set one up. I have tried "123456", "000000" and "999999" and they didn't work.
