Music frequently removed from my iPhone

Why is it that music I download from iCloud music (a mixture of my own music and stuff added to my library from Apple Music) keeps being removed from my iPhone? More than once I've found that I want to listen to something only to find that it's gone and I need to download it again. Not always convenient, and I don't see any way to control what is removed. I have plenty of space on my phone - more than 100 GB free - so it's not as if iOS is clearing it out to reclaim space.

It's happened on iOS 10 and 11. Is there any rhyme or reason to this?
