how do i stop messages from going to both phone...

Go to settings, click messages, click send and receive. remove the checkmark from your apple id. If it says "Use your apple id for imessage" i dont know what to do. you will then need to contact apple support. Please reply what happens.

On the iPhone: Settings->Messages->Text Message Forwarding, and uncheck the iPad.  This will stop the SMS messages from the iPhone being sent to the iPad.

If you want to stop iMessages all together, then you will have to sign out of the Apple ID in Messages on the iPad. But then the iPad will be unable to send or receive any and all messages.
