Strange lines on screen only in Time Machine

I have some strange vertical and horizontal lines when I enter in Time Machine.

I've checked for errors on the the graphic card but it's working fine.

Specs:

macOS Sierra 10.12 (16A320)

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

Hi!

Thanks for posting your concerns in the Apple Communities. If you are seeing some abnormal lines on your display when entering the Time Machine app, try resetting the NVRAM. How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

What is NVRAM?

A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “non-volatile random-access memory” or NVRAM, stores certain settings in a location that OS X can access quickly. The settings that are stored in NVRAM depend on the type of Mac you're using, and the types of devices connected to it.

Information stored in NVRAM can include:

  • Speaker volume
  • Screen resolution
  • Startup disk selection
  • Recent kernel panic information, if any

If you experience issues related to these features, you might need to reset the NVRAM on your computer. For example, if your Mac starts up from a startup disk other than the one you've specified in Startup Disk preferences, or if a question mark icon appears briefly when your Mac starts up.

Restart normally after the reset and test the Time machine app. Let us know if it works for you. Have a great day.

Hi and thanks Chris,

I've reset NVRAM but lines are still visible on Time Machine (only). Strange... I think it's a software issue, not with logic board battery as stated in your link about how to reset NVRAM, but maybe I'm wrong. Everything was fine before upgrade to macOS Sierra.

You're welcome! Thanks for trying the reset. If this did not make any positive changes while using the Time Machine app, try changing the color profile using your display settings in your System's preferences. macOS Sierra: Set your display’s color profile

See if this does the trick. Take care.

Thanks,

but this also didn't work. But can you write which profile should I use or should I calibrate my current profile?

Great question. Yes, you can calibrate your current profile to see if that resolves it. Try placing a check mark in the box that says "Show profiles for this display only"  You can then select each one and test the Time Machine app to see if the lines go away as well. Please use the links below for assistance.

It's still the same. But in ColorSync Utility i have these errors (I don't know of this is related in anyway with topic, but I'll post it here):

chris,

Could this be the beginning of the graphics card failing? I had an iMac 24", a few lines started, then many lines with an outcome of it not working at all (lines).

Just a thought.

I understand. This could be related to the lines, but really can't be sure of it. Very strange that it is only occurring within the Time Machine app. Let's see if this is a system-wide issue, by testing in a new user:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If it happens in a new user then I would recommend reinstalling macOS Sierra to see if that will resolve it. You can reinstall without losing any data on the Mac at all.

macOS Sierra: Reinstall macOS

@JayB - Changing user didn't work. I'll try reinstall, but I don't have the time for this at the moment to do that

@Garrat - it would be a shame if it is a graphic card because it's only a few months old mac.

I hope its not the graphics card as well. And I hope you find an easy fix.

I have the exact same problems on a 2016 rMB after update to Sierra.

Black vertical and horizontal lines when using Time Machine. They move with the windows while scrolling through the backups. When I take a screenshot they disappear. If I take a screenshot while the windows are moving the screenshot shows a big grey box left and bottom.

Furthermore, when I use Spotlight for the first time after reboot, I get white pixels in the dropdown shadow. They even move with the shadow when I drag the spotlight bar to an other position. Next time I open Spotlight they are gone.

SMC, NVRAM reset, boot in safemode and changing resolution did not help.

You could consider running Apple diagnostics to see if it reports any errors that give you options to consider…

Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support

It should test the graphics card & other hardware & report any errors, personally I would ensure the Mac is cold, then run the test multiple times to see if it appears. Some issues can be related to temperature.

Already did a Apple Diagnostic, no errors.

On macrumors there is an other user with the same problem. He even did a clean install of Sierra, problem stayed.

Apple may not be happy with second hand 'another user on the internet said…' results so I would backup & clean install OS X to see the results for yourself. If you take it to a store they may do a clean install as a test if you have full a backup.

If Time Machine shows that issue on a clean install contact Apple & arrange a repair - you can still 'browse time machine' without having an active backup, hold alt (or option) and select the option to 'Browse other backup disks' from the Time Machine menu.

Since it is a late 2015 model you probably want to hurry & raise an issue as the warranty may expire depending on when you purchased & if you have Apple care too.
