With the recent update of iTunes, it appears that I can no longer purchase, manage, and update all the Apps I own on my Mac. How am I supposed to purchase, manage, and keep up-to-date all my apps, especially those I have not loaded to an iOS device now?

By now, there is no way to do so in iTunes on your computer as the App panel was removed with the latest iTunes 12.7 update. If you want to download an App, you have to download it directly on your iOS device. If you want to purchase an App, use your iOS device etc. Apps you already downloaded on your Mac are still available in the iTunes Media folder and can be transferred to the iOS device with drag & drop, but that´s it.

Understanding this is how it is for now, this is an unacceptable situation. I have over 14,000 iOS apps and a better app management solution needs to be provided to keep these apps up to date. It is more than annoying to have to buy an app you may not use right away and then delete it all from the iOS device. And then having to search on the device for an App I bought months ago that I now want to use is going to be painful. Admittedly I'm not the average user with regards to apps, and I'm all for making iTunes more media focused, but provide the users with a better solution than do it all from the iOS device.

I fully agree with you. I hope Apple will bring back at least the option for managing iOS Apps in iTunes. For me it's okay to have to purchase Apps directly on the iOS device. That's the way I do it for years. I don't need the App Store in iTunes. Usually I paused the download for Apps I don't need right the moment on my iOS device and I resumed the download on my Mac with automatic downloads, so I can keep the App in my library for later. For the moment all we can do is send Apple Feedback and hope for a new update with the App panel.  Feedback - iTunes - Apple

Hello folks, I’m non-too happy with this move either, I have a number of devices that can’t run iOS 11 and thus I need to be able to maintain a separate version of software for those apps that have gone iOS 11 (or 64-bit only).

But just so you all know, there is an alternative. Actually a few, but one being official and from Apple.

It’s called Apple Configuator 2 and you can find it on the Mac App Store.

With the application you can upload and download apps in similar ways to how iTunes did it. You can also create local back-ups of the devices and restore them and iOS updates as well. It can do somethings that you can do with iTunes as well, like creating supervised (managed) devices that give you great control over what your child’s iOS devices are allowed and not allowed to do. You can create templates with base settings. With macOS Server there are even more things you can do with it too including making remote changes and updates to devices. (This is great in doing tech support like updates, etc. for my parents’ iPhones who live in another country.)

Check it out! It’s not going to be going anywhere because schools and business need it for managing large numbers of devices.

In this image you can see the Apps that are installed on your device and using the Add button, you can download and add apps directly from the iOS App Store or you can click “Choose from my Mac…” and select any older app from your computer.

The device does not need to be supervised to do this either.

While configurator is one solution for installing apps to iOS devices, it does not address the issue that I raised. I have thousands of iOS apps. I prefer to keep them up-to-date as much as possible. In addition, I like to be able to purchase new apps without necessarily installing them on any of my devices right away. What Apple has done has taken away the ability to manage my apps easily and efficiently from my Mac. Now I have to go to an iOS device, purchase an App then delete it if I don't want it installed right away. In addition, the only Apps that get updated are the ones that are currently installed on my iOS devices.

As I said, I don't really mind Apple refocussing iTunes more towards media, but they NEED to provide a BETTER solution than the one they are giving us now. Having to manage iOS apps only from in iOS device is clumsy and inefficient. I NEED a solution that gives me the ability to view, update and manage my apps similarly to what we had in the previous version of iTunes. I'd be happy to have an App that will do that if they don't want to restore the function in iTunes.
