Since I got this machine, it had this habit of freezing and then randomly rebooting behind the scenes and then presenting the login screen. What I mean about rebooting behind the scenes is that while I am working, it freezes. While I am wondering what the heck is going on, it seems to be rebooting in the background, the display isstill on and showing the screens as when it froze. Then after some seconds, the login screen is presented and I need to login and the normal startup actions are performed.
It remembers the open programs and seems to have done a decent shutdown of them.
There is no indication of the reason for the reboot, no grey box telling me that the mac rebooted or question to reopen the apps, it just gets done.
Extremely frustrated, my day to day work machine and at the moment active for about 15h a day...crunch time...
Anybody else seen this?
What can I do about it Apple?
Apple replaced both graphic cards and problem seems to be resolved.
What can I do about it Apple?
Just wanted to address this question first. The Apple Support Communities (ASC) is a user-to-user support forum. Apple representatives, may or may not, respond to posts here ... so, if you want an answer from Apple, then you will need to contact them directly.
Since I got this machine, it had this habit of freezing and then randomly rebooting behind the scenes and then presenting the login screen.
Did you get your Mac Pro new from Apple or used from another source. Not trying to tell you what you should have done in either case, just trying to understand what you have attempted to do to resolve this when you first noticed it start happening to not waste your time with "solutions" you already tried.
I would suggest a couple of things at this point:
- Boot up your Mac Pro in Safe Mode. Run in this mode for a day or two to see if you still see the same issues.
- Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
- Run EtreCheck and post the results so that we can look "behind the scenes" to see what the culprit may be. In this case, you will want the Mac Pro to be booted up normally.
EDIT: I only saw the response from TesseraX now so I wil post a reply on it separately. Thanks Tesserax for replying. It was a brand new Mac Pro from Apple Store.
I still have this problem. I have now ruled out a few possibilities:
It is most likely not:
1. RAM - replaced the factory 12GB with new 64GB
2. SSD - replace the factory 256GB with OWC 4TB
3. not OsX install, did a clean re-install
4. Not parallels VM, had crashed when Parallels VM not running.
For such an expensive piece of equipment (for me at least) I find it hard to believe I must live with these reboots in silence. Seems like Apple is not gonna respond to my query. I am typing this on my 2010 Macbook Pro since the Mac Pro is busy with an install. Not to cloud the issue, but the 2010 Macbook Pro has for years now been rebooting randomly due to a graphics card issue. Can only use the internal Intel adaptor. Makes me wonder why I still love apple.
Here is a short crash log I did just to record the occurrences. Keep in mind that I often have a VM running due to my current work assignment.
CRASH LOG
25/3/2017 22:02 Ubuntu running in parallels. Watching youtube video in Osx
27/3/2017 17h45 Windows running in parallels. Outlook open
27/3/2017 19h14 Windows running in parallels
28/3/2017 14h46 Windows running in parallels
11/4/2017 ?? Nothing special, no VM
11/4/2017 21h30 just rebooted, browsing internet with safari
Tesserae, thanks for the reply. Sorry I did not see it earlier.
It was a brand new Mac Pro from the apple shop. I did not yet return it to them since I simply cannot afford to not have it. My Macbook Pro is also crashing all the time due to video card issue, the main reason I took the plunge to the Mac Pro.
I will try the safe boot, but the problem is so random that I will probably need to run it like that for a week to be sure it does not occur.
The Mac Pro is busy installing, so I will run etrecheck when it is done.
Thanks again for the reply.
Hmm. Your crash logs indicate the running Parallels in March caused all of the crashes. Do you happen to be running Windows 10 Creator's Update in one of your VMs? If so, Parallels has put out a warning that its application needs to be upgraded before doing so. That would mean that you will need to delete any Win10 CU VMs. Then update Parallels, and then, create a new VM for CU.
I will need to see your EtreCheck report to address the other crashes.
Thanks for the response. I initially did suspect Parallels, but after I had some crashes (of exact same behavior) I ruled it out. I only use Win7 and Linux Ubuntu. No Win10.
I just did a disk wipe and restore from TimeMachine, would the kernel panic logs still be there?

Sorry, I didn't get back sooner. I was on a long overdue vacation.

TOSHIBA External USB 3.0

VIA Labs, Inc. USB3.0 Hub
VIA Labs, Inc. USB3.0 Hub
VIA Labs, Inc. USB2.0 Hub

It appears that you have an external USB hub attached to your Mac. Temporarily disconnect this hub to see if the issue goes away.
rEFItBlesser: Path: /Library/StartupItems/rEFItBlesser
Startup items no longer function in OS X Yosemite or later
You should delete this item from the StartupItems folder.
[loaded] org.wireshark.ChmodBPF.plist (2017-03-23) [Support] - /Library/Application Support/Wireshark/ChmodBPF/ChmodBPF: Executable not found!
Here I would suggest that you completely remove Wireshark, and do a fresh install of their latest version.
FlashPlayer-10.6: 24.0.0.221 - SDK 10.9 (2017-03-23) [Support]
Flash Player: 24.0.0.221 - SDK 10.9 (2017-03-23) Outdated! Update
Unless you absolutely need to use FlashPlayer, I would suggest that you remove it.
Finally, the diagnostics logs indicate an issue with CPU resources.
Other than the above items, I don't see anything else that would be an issue.
Hi, thanks for getting back. Hope you have a great vacation.
I will try these points above and see how it goes and report back once I had at least 4 more crashes.
Best regards
So I eventually took the machine in to iStore for the Genius to run their "special diagnostics" only to tell me nothing is wrong.
A complete fresh install was done.
I then Time Machine restored some file to allow working.
Also restored a windows VM needed.
As some point is froze, had to power cycle and then ran etrecheck but it did not pick up any crash reports.
This morning 25/5 it crashed again and now etrecheck has a report as below. Anyone want to speculate on the errors?

Again it looks like Parallels is "beating up" your CPUs.
The only thing I can suggest at this time is to perform another clean install of the OS ... but this time do NOT migrate any data from Time Machine or any other types of backups so that your Mac Pro stays "clean."
Try running in this configuration for 24 - 48 hours to see if the random crashes continue. If not, only install Parallels. Create a new Window VM of your choosing. Do not install any other software ... yet! Give it another 24 hours at least to see if the crashing re-occurs.
Please post back your results.
Thanks for the reply. It is understandable that Parallels is pushing the CPU a bit. I have 8 cores assigned to it and do some heavy compiling on it. Software development and hardware development is what we do. That is why I got a quad core Xeon machine in the first place. ;>)
It is very difficult for me to not run windows for 48 hours. Nothing much to do on machine except word processing....
I think I will migrate my project to OsX and compile it on there for a while (using QT) and see if it ever happens.
The reference to the "WindowsServer" in the crash, is that the OSx windows server or the microsoft windows?
Regards

You would certainly think that your Mac Pro, as configured, would be able to handle that with ease. However, since you do development work, especially for Windows ... wouldn't it make more sense to run Windows under BootCamp instead as a VM? ... or even get a dedicated Windows development box? Not trying to say I know best for what your development needs are, just offering a suggestion.
The reference to the "WindowsServer" in the crash, is that the OSx windows server or the microsoft windows?
Neither actually ... but it does relate to an OS X process. I guess the best way I can describe it is WindowServer is a system service that acts as a liaison between OS X applications and the Mac's graphics hardware. This process basically tells the graphics card what and where to draw an image.
Hi, you are 100% correct that a bootcamp would be a good option for those days where I spend most of my time on the windows development. I actually have another post on here trying to sort out installing bootcamp with window 7 (or even 10) but bootcamp assistant is trying to be clever and blocks the process.
Heaven forbid a Windows box on my desk!
With respect to the WindowsServer error and it complaining about access to the GPU, I will move the Displayport cable to connect to the other GPU and see how that goes.
Apple replaced both graphic cards and problem seems to be resolved.
