Lion v1.7.2

Am a new convert to Mac, disgusted with Win Vista. Family went together and gave me a Mac Mini for Christmas, and am struggling to understand  some new and mystifying Apple/Mac terms and features.

What does EFI, the acronym, stand for? What does EFI do for this system (OS X Lion v10.7.2)? Does this system have EFI that needs updating, or must I find some EFI somewhere and install it prior to updating with the new EFI v1.4.4? Discussions of EFI changes seem to indicate that EFI is in firmware - - so, is EFI analogous to the BIOS firmware in a PC?

When I started to run the subject update pkg, it promptly told me in so many words, "Alert! This software is not supported on your system." with a yellow-triangle download-logo in the alert.  Upon my clicking its Close button, it quit and closed. It had started with the Installer.app (Default).

Please give me some helpful explanation of these issues.

It stands for Extesible Firmware Interface, and yes it is analagous to BIOS.

If you run Software Update, it will tell you what updates are available for your

machine.  There is no need to manually download, unless you really want

to.  You can set it up to just automatically install or you can manually

check it periodically.  I personally run Software Update periodically

rather than auto because it always seems that it wants to update at

times when I don't have the time for it.

You may possibly have downloaded the incorrect one or

the Mini was already up to date.

Also, if you prefer to do a manual download from Apple and install,

run Software Update first to see what updates are requested.

Thanks to Woodmeister50 for these helpful comments.  OK, I understand that EFI is 'a good thing' and when my mini was new, it started up much more quickly than my Windows 8 laptop, and that is also 'a good thing.'  I have the impression that there was/is a simple way to view the version number of the EFI installed.  I cannot find that view, now (long ago, yr humble servant updated to Lion 10.7.3, and now have v10.7.5, and after having purchased and installed 8GB of RAM, DD3, 1333 MHz),  I am hoping to successfully upgrade to macOS Sierra 10.12.6 by tomorrow  - -  wish me luck!).

In System Info.app, there is no item called 'EFI,' but it does list in the Hardware Overview section,  "Boot ROM Version: MM51.0077.B10."  The next line item in the list is "SMC Version (system): 1.76f0," and I have no idea what the SMC stands for.   But these do not seem to relate with any clarity, to the EFI version number, 1.4.  We understand from the item, "Serial--ATA" in the Hardware section of SystemInfo.app, that the EFIS proper is installed in a hidden partition on the internal system hard drive, designated as disk0s1.  How does the "Boot ROM" item relate to the EFIS?  Is the "SMC" item related?

Just now, found in the Software/Frameworks section a lone line item, "EFILogin," with  "Version: 1.0,    Last Modified: 8/23/13 11:26 PM,    Kind: Intel,     64-Bit (Intel): Yes,  and  Location: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EFILogin.framework."   Hmmmm.

Any more help from anyone, would be welcome.

  Private: Yes

  Boot ROM Version: MM
