Smart folders: excluding certain file type from...

I am wanting to set up some smart folders which list a number of project folders.

My problem is that when I search for 'Kind is Folder' it also brings up .mbox files. I'm not sure why they are classed as folders—they clutter my search I'd like to get rid of them. I was hoping to exclude them by 'File extension' however the only option there is for inclusion 'is' (not for exclusion 'is not').

I saw a solution using raw queries, but that's not helpful as I'm unfamiliar with scripting. I am also not keen to reorganise the current filing method as a solution. It would certainly make it easy to have an exclusion 'is not' variable, however, in the absence of this I would love if someone has a work around?
