I tried resetting NVRAM as suggested and after ten minutes of being "on" the monitor is very slowly slowly changing from all black to black with a vertical navy blue stripe in the center of the screen.  The color changed gradually to all purple then gradually lightened until the monitor display returned to its normal state. Thanks!
