Installing High Sierra when it arrives...

I´m intending to install High Sierra on an external SSD drive as soon as it arrives, and then boot from it to try out my apps and see what works and what doesn't. Before doing this I will of course make up to date Time Machine backups on two WD external drives, plus a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner onto another external SSD drive. I usually do this before an OS upgrade to my iMac.

My question is this: before I boot up for the first time into High Sierra should I disconnect my two Time Machine drives? I´m worried (probably unnecessarily) that Time Machine might overwrite or somehow interfere with my latest backups, which I might need if I want to go back to Sierra! I could of course just turn TM off as soon as High Sierra has finished booting, but disconnecting my TM drives seems safer!

I´ve never been worried about this with other upgrades before, but now ask because I´m just not sure (slightly confused to be honest!) about the working of the new APFS file system that comes with High Sierra. Thanks for any help/suggestions etc. that might put my mind at rest! Cheers, Ian.

That's the easiest way to do it Ian. That precaution would address the (however unlikely) possibility that TM would need to reclaim so much space for a new backup that it would erase all older backups after completing the newer one. It doesn't tell you about that until after the fact.

Thanks so much for replying so swiftly, John! I like easy solutions that are also precautions, as you say, so I´ll just disconnect the TM drives to be 100% safe and until I get to grips with High Sierra and APFS. Ian.
