Problem with trackpad on Mac OS Sierra

  After upgrading my trackpad is not working as smooth as it used to in El Capitan. Now it scrolls way too fast on some applications and slow and not smoothly on google chrome. There is no way to fix this on the accessibility menu with the trackpad speed. I hope you look into it fast, it is very annoying.

Sierra generates much more scroll events than El Capitan. So the native delta from the operating system became close to 0, but Swing still converts it to 1. This makes scrolling too harsh.


Don't know how can that be fixed though.

Check your settings in System Preferences > Trackpad.  (not Accessibility)

I already did. It is an issue with the scrolling with the two finger gesture, thanks for answering.

This is not the issue, I'm experiencing the same with programs like Thunderbird, OpenOffice, etc, and only with the scrolling gesture that is now way too fast.

After installing Sierra, 2 finger scrolling no longer worked. I went into Accessibility and went into trackpad options and turned on scrolling. It worked for a day then suddenly stopped again. I restarted Air several times and also turned on and off option for scrolling at the same time. Several times during this the pointer disappeared on the startup screen so had to restart to make it appear.

Also, during this same time of restarting, I could no longer double click any apps or folders on my desktop to open. I could still open them using "command O"

I was able to open them by changing the speed of the double-click in Accessibility by making it much slower.

Also, I played around with the "enable dragging" but needed it to be turned off to avoid the jumping.

Having the same exact problem, horizontal two-finger scrolling is laggy/unresponsive.

Same problem here with Illustrator.

Since the update zooming in and out by pressing the alt-key and moving two fingers up or down is horrible, not smoothly. Please fix this issue soon!

Same here. Some of my trackpad gestures work, like three finger swipe to change desktops, but I cannot scroll twi fingers at all.

I got my problem fixed. I had been going into the Trackpad and toggling scrolling on and off to no avail. This time I went into Accessibility. Then Click on Mouse and Trackpad. Now click on Trackpad Options. The scrolling box is most likely highlighted already. Toggle it off and then back on and see if that fixes it - it did for me. Now go back to the Trackpad in System Preferences and make sure you have everything selected as desired.

My MacBook Air required the scrolling to be ON in Accessibility. The scrolling was still intermittent until I restarted several times. I also had to make sure the speed of the double-click in Accessibility is much slower or else double clicking to open apps and folders didn't work.

I happen to know two types of software which scrolls lightning fast in macOS Sierra:

  • Java based application, e.g. PyCharm
  • The "classic" Terminal application

What's in common is that they scroll line-by-line, but not continuously like Safari or Pages.

 

When I say "lightning fast", I mean when I swipe with two fingers from bottom to top of the trackpad of my MacBook Air, the Terminal application scrolls about six pages, or the PyCharm app scrolls about 250 to 300 lines.

 

That's totally INSANE.

 

However, Safari, Pages, Chrome, Sublime Text 3, Evernote, anything else that scrolls continuously but not line-by-line, behave normally.

 

To fix the problem, here's what I tried one by one, suggested by some expert:

 

Rebooting to safe mode cost me more than 20 minutes. So DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!

 

On my MacBook Air, Mac OS X Lion was pre-installed, then it was upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion, then OS X Mavericks, then OS X Yosemite, then OS X El Capitan. None of them caused scrolling problem.

 

Now we upgrade to macOS Sierra, then scrolling problem happens, to a large group of people, to some specific applications.

 

So this is DEFINITELY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM of macOS Sierra. NO EXCUSE.

I experienced this problem myself about a week ago after getting my GM. Go into system preferences and uncheck everything and then enable force touch and everything else. Then your problem should be fixed.
