My macbook won’t startup

My MacBook won’t start.  I can get to the login screen in safemode, but it won’t continue past that.  I think it’s a mid or late 2009 MacBook running Mavericks.  I have data I need to retrieve, then I would like to wipe HD clean & load High Sierra.  Can I use single user mode to fix problems.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Macguy4861,

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems like your MacBook will not boot past the login screen using safe mode. One thing you could try is to boot into recovery mode and run disk utility to see if there are any errors that can be repaired. If not, one thing you could do is try and get the MacBook into target disk mode and use a separate computer to pull the data like it was an external drive.

Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

Use target disk mode to share files between two Mac computers

Cheers.
