Constant Hard Drive Activity.

I am getting constant hard drive activity, I can hear the hard drive "twitching" ALL the time. I have carried out a disc repair, permissions repair and checked for any unusual activity in activity monitor. I have also used TechTool to check out the system. In all case I am informed that the hard drive "appears" to be ok, not withstanding this is it possible that the hard drive is on the way out or would a new install of the OS cure the problem.

The computer as a whole is running very slow and the spinning beach ball is a regular feature on the screen!!, can anyone advise?.

Try safe boot, it seemed to help with mine. You need to hold down the shift key while the Mac starts up and keey it held down until the log on screen appears, to have the mac start in safe mode you need a USB keyboard rather than the bluetooth one. Once you've started up in safe mode close down and then restart.

Clear the java cache seems to help as well - just routine maintenance I suppose

The drive may be thrashing, i.e. constantly writing to the drive because of insufficient Memory. Open Activity Monitor>System Memory, what do you see for Page outs and Swap used?

Does this happen when you have no Applications open?

Also, how much free space is there on the drive? Click the drive icon>Get info (CMD-I) You should maintain around 15-20% free of available.

Also while in AM, set to "All Processes" >CPU and see if something is hogging a huge amount of CPU.

Please do the following the next time you notice what seems to be excessive disk activity.

First, if you're using Time Machine or some other backup software, check to see whether a backup is in progress. If it is, the disk activity is normal. Stop.

In your administrator account (the one you created when you first set up the Mac), launch the Terminal application. Copy or drag -- do not type -- the text below into the window, and press the return key:

sudo fs_usage | grep stat

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. If this is the first time you've run this type of shell command, you'll get a warning not to screw up.

Once the command starts running, text will scroll rapidly in the window. Let it run for 5-10 seconds, then press command-. (that's two keys: "command" and period.) The text will stop scrolling. If it doesn't, close the Terminal window.

Copy the scrolled text from the Terminal window to the clipboard. Quit Terminal. Paste the text into a reply to this message.

I'm having the same issue with my iMac. I just did the safe boot to no avail. I can still hear my HD chugging along.

I just ran the Terminal program and would like to include the results here but my gosh, the data goes on interminably! I've tried repeatedly to copy and paste the data but it keeps crashing my browser.

BTW, thought I'd let you know, after running the Terminal program, I did notice a great deal of entries for CS3 Version Cue. I ran the Adobe uninstaller and got rid of it and now my HD is nice and quiet.
