Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (non retina)

Does anyone have any recommendations on external monitors/displays for the Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (non retina) 13"? I checked the resolution of my computer, and it says the highest resolution is 1280x800, and I'm not even sure if that's compatible with any monitors now, or any in 4K.

 

If anyone has any tips or any suggestions on how I can connect my computer to a higher resolution monitor that would be helpful. I don't even know what to look for in an external monitor that would be compatible to my computer.
