Tracing an Apple Watch 3

My husband suffers from dementia and he sometimes gets lost. If I get him an Apple watch 3 with LTE, I hope to be able to trace his position when he gets lost.

Hence my questions:

• Is this possible at all or will the watch run out of battery when worn all day without the iPhone being around?
• Do I need a phone number for his watch or can I connect my own watch as well as his to my iPhone?

NB: I do not want to use the phone function of the watch, he does not answer calls. So this is purely about tracing not about calling.
