iTunes genre missing: Christian & Gospel

If I go to any genre and look at their home page, I get new albums, top 10 singles, top 10 albums, and staff picks; however, this is no longer available for the Christian & Gospel genre. Does anyone know if this is a bug, intentional, or a change in the works? I am saddened, especially since the last 2 number 1 releases and albums in iTunes and Billboard's Top 200 were Christian albums. I mention this to give validity to the genre as a desired music style.

Just to confirm, I asked friends in other parts of the country and they get the same screen. Also, on my iPad 1 and the New iPad, the genre is not available tries to go back to the home screen and crashes the Music purchase app. Crazy but they must be doing something or there is a big bug.

I saw too. Hope it's a bug.

Yup, iTunes removed the genre. Here is the response from iTunes support:

Dear Robert,

This is Benex from iTunes Store Customer Support.

I understand that you are concerned that the Christian & Gospel category disappeared from the iTunes Store.

Unfortunately, these are no longer available. However, Apple is constantly working with content providers to expand the iTunes Store catalog and to make more items available. Just check the Store for updates because new items are added everyday.

Your comments and suggestions are an integral part of this continuing effort to provide quality content. To request that certain items be distributed, please visit this web page:

I wanted to look for some new music and the Christian & Gospel genre is gone. What happened? If you feel like it is not a viable genre, I am very saddened, especially since the no. 1 albums in all of iTunes for the past 3 weeks were Christian albums. Can you tell me why it is gone, is it coming back, and what are you doing to the genres. Please, please do not take it away!

WHY on earth would they remove it!? This ticks me off!

Have you checked other online music download stores? Amazon MP3 seems to have a full-fledged category for "Christian and Gospel," featuring the following subcategories:

You can buy MP3s from any online source and add them to your iTunes library. You are not required to purchase at the iTunes Store.

Just out of curiosity, is this where you buy your Christian music? On that note, I think it is highly suspect that the largest distributor of music will not support the AMA or Grammy genres for awards. This seems to isolate a unique genre for unknown reasons that some folks have very strong, angry, and even projected hostility toward. Religion is an especially sensitive topic for some, and that is understandable. I respect that; however, this is a genre that has been around a long time and the last 2 number 1 albums (Toby Mac and Lecrae on the Billboard Top 200) were Christian artists.

I find it disheartening that they would remove the Christian & Gospel homepage, as it is always nice to see this type of music in a central location. I regularly go there to buy sub-genre types of Christian & Gospel like Praise and Worship. Seeing new artists and album covers really help promote and sell the music.

I will indeed be going to their stores to find out the artist, but it is still unreasonable. I made a 100% commitment to iTunes for all of my family's and my music. I do not own a CD to my name. All of my music is in ACC format, so a deviation would be huge.

Many arguments (even arguments and complaints made in the Apple forums) are that the Christian & Gospel genre offends people. Why can't I equitably make the same argument that sexually overtoned music and anti-faith values music offend me? The argument appears to only go one way, so I am skeptical of such illogical arguments.

Needless to say, I think the move is quite unacceptable in light of history and the volume this music sells. If Apple were to develop some tool to make a musical home page based on user preferences and likes, that superseded all genres, then I would be more inclined to embrace. I essentially need a home page that displays when new artists and styles become available. I think an intelligent engine could do so, but it really should be equitable for all. Just my 2 cents and respectfully...

I'm no longer buy music from iTunes if this is true...what a load of crap...I'll get my Christian music from Amazon...where they aren't scared to still have a Christian Music Page.

All of my music is in ACC format, so a deviation would be huge.

Where on earth did you get that idea? iTunes can easily handle libraries of mixed formats including MP3 and AAC. Not only would it not be "huge," it would not even cause a ripple.

Yep. It's competely gone. Switching to AMAZON.

I sent in a ticket on Sat. 9/8, and at first the rep did not know what I was talking about. After 3 screen shots sent in to highlight the issue, I have not gotten a response back yet. Well, most of my 25,000 songs are C&G so it looks as if I'll be going to Amazon. However, I will give Apple til the end of the week to respond/fix or bring back the C&G genre or I'm gone!!

Well, good news... I think. Our complaints and me asking several hundred friends to contact iTunes might have paid off. They have it back for now if you choose categories on the right. It is not under the Music drop down arrow, but it is on the right in categories. I can see the Christian & Gospel in list of values on the right side and now on my iPhone. It looks different, so maybe it is begin updated for Wednesday or maybe it was brought back after a lot of emails and concerns. I am happy for now and will see if it remains. Let's wait till Wednesday to see if they have some new sort of categories or genres or search engine. Whew for now.

Hi I just noticed this happened again.

I just checked the iTunes genres on my phones and it has been removed (I am in the U.K. Store).

This is a genre I use a lot and millions of others use. Why has it been removed and is it possible to get it back? If not it will be too difficult to purchase music on here and I will have to move across to a different platform.

Thanks
