Mac Dark Theme and Preferences Not Working!

Hi,

I have a Mac Pro 3,1, it works absolutely fine, runs smoothly on OS X Yosemite. I have been having an issue as of lately though; whenever I go to 'Settings' > 'General' > and try to change the appearance color, highlight color, and especially enabling the dark theme, none of the settings I configure ever save! In fact, the dark theme doesn't even display. When I close out of the preferences app, it's back to square one (doesn't save). I have a space themed desktop background, and it just doesn't look good without the darker themes. Is there anyway I can enable these settings from the terminal? Any third party apps? Any fixes at all? I'll accept any method; this shouldn't be happening in the first place! I would appreciate the help, thank you! : )
