Smart mailboxes empty in Sierra. Help?

Migrated Mail over from old iMac running 10.6.8 to new iMac running 10.12.5. Today suddenly I noticed that all my smart mailboxes are not showing up. Only one seems to be there, but it's empty. I tried creating a new smart mailbox, and it too is empty. Even the default Today smart mailbox is empty.

All my Mail accounts are IMAP. Gmail is also configured to work with Mail. I have lots of mailboxes that were imported into Mail from Eudora in 'On My Mac'. These were migrated over when I set up this new iMac.

Please can anyone advise how to get my smart mailboxes working?

Glenn, I've found the answer over at apple.stackexchange.com (mail.app - Mail search not finding messages but Spotlight does - Ask Different):

By Patrix:

This helped me - it allows unrestricted spotlight search - and, after executing that command, mail search and smart mailboxes worked again

Open terminal from the utilities folder and execute:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.appsandbox \ UnrestrictSpotlightContainerScope -bool true

Problem is now solved for me. Both search and smart mailboxes are functioning as they ought!

Check to see if Spotlight is working. If so, check it's configuration to make sure Mail is included. If it's not working, try reindexing spotlight.

How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support

If Spotlight is working, try reindexing mail messages:

Quit Mail.

In the Finder menu, select Go, then Go to Folder and paste:

~/Library/Mail/V4/MailData

A Finder window will open to the MailData folder. Select any file containing Envelope Index,ExternalUpdates, or Smart Folder and move them to the trash.

Open Mail and hit Continue. Let Mail finish indexing, then try and see if you can create a Smart Mailbox.

Hi Glenn, thank you for your quick response. Spotlight is working. I followed your instructions but after Mail completed indexing, smart mailboxes are still not working at all. They are not populating. This is also true for the default Today smart mailbox. By the way, the search function in Mail is also not working. I don't know if this is related to the smart mailbox problem, but I mention it because it seems to me that the smart mailboxes depend on it.

Yes, SM would depend on the search feature working in Mail.

Good to see you got it fixed.

I have the same problem with my mail and spotlight search. for some reason my smart mailboxes stopped working and I noticed at the same time, my searches no longer worked on my macbook air. I read your solution but do not know how to execute the command in terminal. can you give me instructions on how to do this?
