Apple scanner app on desktop

I've been using it for years, but how it works is a mystery to me. When I do get a usable scan out of it, I'm always surprised. It seems to be random.

- I just did a scan, it was supposed to go into the Scanner Output folder, that's how it was set, but it ended up in the Pictures folder. (I had to do a search for it.)

- What's the trick to getting more than one page into a document? I tried to do two 2-page scans, unchecking the "Combine into single document" box in between, but they all ended up in the same doc (in the Pictures folder).

- What is Overview vs Scan for?

- How can I use the crop box to get two cropped images into one document?

Maybe I should just install something else? What would you recommend?

(And how could Apple let this crumminess go on for so long?)

PS The "Choose Location" menu for this post is nuts! The design of these forums is very poor. Apple better hire some UX designers quick.
