Is there an app or software that measures + log...
I've been paying for internet speeds of 150Mbps for a year, and now 200Mbps for another half year, but 90% of the time I get dial-up speeds averaging around 12Mbps. I'd like to find an app or software that is automated and will track and log broadband speeds so I have something concrete to present my ISP. They have yet to deliver their minimum 10% of promised speed for more than a few days at a time and offer bandaids but no actual correction.
I have had at least a dozen techs come and do busy work for the most part-- swapping routers, splitters, etc-- things improve for one or two days until speeds plunge again. It seems no one is willing to get their hands dirty. I've had the "advanced" tech team on the phone and the results are the same. I've turned off my ISP hotspot (although I don't think it was being used), double-checked my router and computer settings, and test wired speeds using independent (non-cable owned) meters like Megapath. I don't know if it's significant but part of my router is dedicated to the home security service I have through the ISP.
I'm reasonably sure there is nothing amiss on my end and now suspect, through process of elimination, that I may have degraded or damaged lines running from the street to my house (built in 1965) or that my ISP is throttling my bandwidth, but have no evidence for this.
Thoughts, tips?
Probably true of every ISP, thats why they advertise 'speeds up to' etc etc.
The speeds I mentioned are actually minimum speeds ... 150Mbps and up, 200Mbps and up
I doubt that they are minimums, maximums are much more likely, and actual can of course differ.
But you need to find out what bandwidth they are really sending you, so disconnect from your Router and connect directly to your modem so that you may see what comes out of their equipment, If you have one of those combined router/modem models you may not be able to access the modem without using the router so don't bother.
Apologies Eau Rouge and Csound1 ... you are both absolutely right. Thanks for your replies. This is perhaps not relevant to what you were saying, but to correct myself: with my 200Mbps plan the minimum speed they're required to deliver of 10% (don't know how they get away with that) would be 20Mbps. They've been delivering an average of 5% promised rate, 10Mbps. Csound1, I'll look into the router/modem tip you mentioned ...

You can log it with this...
It's funny how every year you can see everything slowing down to a crawl on the internet. We call our ISP and the first thing they say is go for a higher package and the majority of us fall for it.
I did this over a year ago cause I got sick and tired of my ISP grubbing more and more money from my pocket instead of supplying me with the speed or at least be close to the speed I'm paying for. I caught my ISP throttling my bandwidth. I went to internethealthtest.org and ran tests twice a day from the beginning of the month to the end of the month. When you go to the site run 3 - 5 tests each time. The site will run a upload and download speed to various servers around your area. It will show the various speeds you're getting and your average speed. When the first test is completed they have a mail option where you can have the test emailed directly to you. If you don't want that open the "Grab" app that is located in your applications "other" folder and take a snapshot of the page with the results from the tests you run. Keep the worst results each day. At the end of the month select 6 of the worst results. Open up Pages app and insert all of them into Pages and make it into a PDF file.
If you live in the USA go to the FCC complaints page ( https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us ) and click internet fill out all the information they ask for. It will have a place you can upload the pdf with the pics of the results showing you're not getting the speeds you have been paying for and send all the info to the FCC. It took the FCC only 1 day to get back to me saying they would forward my complaint to my ISP. The ISP has 30 days to fix the problem and report back to the FCC. My ISP called me the day after the FCC forwarded my complaint. They fixed my internet within 2 weeks and I was receiving the speeds I was paying for. This will probably give you an extra year maybe more of receiving the bandwidth you've been paying for.
Now over a year later my ISP has starting to do the same thing as before except they are taking a different approach. My ISP has become selective in throttling only certain websites like Youtube or Netflix My ISP now makes sure when I run speed tests they all come out as if I'm getting the speeds I pay for yet when I try watching Youtube or Netflix at a certain time it's unwatchable. Now I need to find a way of exposing my ISP with selective throttling.
