How to recover data from a corrupted hard drive

My hard drive recently corrupted

upon start up the bar would get a lititle over half way and then would show a blocked icon (circle with a slash through it). I took it into my local Apple Store and got it checked out, the guy confirmed that it was a corrupted hard drive he then told me that they would replace the hard drive with a solid state hard drive. He asked me if there was anything on the corrupted  drive that I wanted to try and salvage. I want to try and salvage my photos and Lightroom back ups. So I got a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable and a friends macbook so that I would be able to copy the salvagable files although I have come across the issue of my corrupted hard drive not showing up on my friends MacBook as the disk or hard drive it should. My friends MacBook is a late 2011 model and my own from memory is a late 2013 model. I will attach links via google drive of pictures of both screens at the moment for reference.

Hi,

The Thunderbolt icon that moves around your screen tells you your MBP is booted into Target Disk Mode properly. The fact that the HD doesn't show up on the other Mac means their is something serious wrong with the HD. You try one or more of the following apps to see if you can recover any of your files: https://www.toptenreviews.com/software/backup-recovery/best-mac-data-recovery-sof tware/

Thanks for your reply tjk.

Is there any free programs for the data recovery programs?

All the ones I have any knowledge about are listed in the link I provided, but I don't remember if any of them are free. I think some will show you if they can recover anything, but won't let you until you buy the app.

This work at times. Buy a external drive enclosure and place your Mac drive into it. Connect the external drive to a Mac and see if it appears. By luck if it does show up then you can transfer your files. But I must tell you it's a hit-try method.
