iPad Air & iPhone 6s Plus Settings

After updating my iPhone 6s Plus and iPad Air to iOS 11.0, I noticed in both's "Settings" the following message: "Update Apple ID Settings.  Some Account services will not be available..."  I got rid of the ONE message on my iPhone by doing as per the instructions, BUT not on my iPad, which had TWO (red circles with white number 1 in one, and white number 2 in the other red circle).  The number 2 disappeared after I did as per asked, the red number 1 stays.  I've tried several times, but after giving the password on the keyboard that pops up on the screen, the screen goes dim and I can see the keyboard and a spinning wheel in a separate small box, BUT the Wi-Fi light doesn't blink.  After about 15 mins the screen disappears and the initial screen appears with the same "Update Apple..." number 1 still visible.
