help with MAIL: too many "drafts!"
whenever I start typing a message, the mail program automatically saves drafts every minute or so. Then, I find that I have a zillion of these unfinished drafts when I am done. Very frustrating! They take up a lot of space and make it much more difficult to find anything later on.
Is there any way to get MAIL to stop doing this, or to automatically delete all those unfinished drafts once the message is finished & sent?
thanks!
will
Uncheck to store drafts on the server in Mail Preferences> Accounts> Mailbox Behaviors.
Mail autosaves the draft while you work on it. Those autosaved drafts gets copied to the server each time mail syncs to the server. When you send it, Mail only deletes the draft copy on the computer and doesn't delete what's on the server.
When you don't store drafts on the server, a local draft folder is created when you create a new message. When you send the message, it will delete it from the local draft folder.

thanks! very helpful. yes!
It's still a bug, though, I used to start drafts on my laptop and then pick them back up on my desktop, but with this insidious bug this has been difficult in the last few years.
Apple seems to have made some progress here. All accounts enabled to save drafts on the server. I just tested this again with Apple Email, ATT email, and Gmail. All three continually saves the draft changes, but only 1 draft copy shows in mail. Sending deletes the copies in Mail.
With ATT & iCloud, only 1 draft copy saves to the server. Changes continue to update to that one draft. When you send the message in Mail, the draft get deleted from the server and get put to the trash.
With Gmail, every change saved get saved to the gmail server as a new draft. So gmail is still saving multiple copies even though Mail shows only 1 draft copy. Sending the message in Mail deletes the draft. The gmail site lags, although it does seem to remove they after some time. Got mixed results with gmail.
At least now it seems to be deleting the draft copies from the server. So, you might want to try using it again. If you are using gmail, it seems to work better than before.
Has there been an update on this? I'm still getting multiple drafts saved.
I'm not having a problem with Apple email or AT&T email. If you are referring to gmail, it's probably still the same. I don't use gmail to send from, so I'm not sure how it's working with the Mail application.
I can confirm the problem with Gmail is still occurring. I have 1x iCloud and 3x Gmail email accounts logged in and emails I compose under the Gmail accounts produce multiple drafts. - I just deleted a swath of drafts (300+) made up of only TWO different emails!
I am keen for a fix! While I believe it's a limitation caused by a positive feature offered on the Gmail website, I might submit a bug report to Apple in case in can be addressed at Mail end of things.
Uncheck storing drafts on the server for that account and you won't have that problem.
It may be really crazy for your, I hope you find a solution as soon as possible!
Sorry, I also have similar problems recently. Unchecking <store draft on server>, did help initially but after same problem. Any ideas?
Apple please fix this!
The solution proposed stops mail from saving drafts on the server but not locally. I go to reply to an earlier e-mail in the day and search by recipient, only I have to weed through some 20 drafts I never asked to be saved to find the e-mail I need.
This is beyond annoying. Especially since e-mail has worked just fine for decades without this behavior.
Unfortunately I *do* want Mail to save drafts on the server because I often compose a mail on different devices. With this bug, there are lots of drafts appearing in every other Gmail client both during composing the mail as well as after having sent it, which is very annoying.
I no longer use Yosemite, so I can't comment on how it works today. However, I assume nothing has changed on this. I haven't tested this on iOS devices to see if the same happens, but I believe it's more of a problem on the computer OS. What you might do is set iOS devices to save drafts on the server and leave the computer to save drafts locally. The server draft mailbox will still be available in Mail's sidebar under the account. If you start a draft on the computer and you will finish it on another device, you can copy or move the draft from the local mailbox to the server mailbox manually. Or, just deal with the multiple draft copies. If I remember right, the multiple drafts do eventually disappear on their own once the email is sent.
Otherwise, the only suggestion I can offer is to send feedback to apple on this matter.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.
