I need to upgrade my MacBook Air, OS X Maverick...

I have not upgraded my OS because the last time I did (to upgrade to Mavericks) my old HP scanner didn't work anymore. I found a patch to fix that issue and the old scanner still works with my computer.

I really need to upgrade because most of my software can't be upgraded anymore because the OS is too old.

Could someone please tell me how to do the upgrade and which OS should I use?

Are there any things I should be careful about before upgrading.

I use Time Machine to back everything up now- will this be an issue when I upgrade the OS?

I am mostly just chicken about doing this and I hope I have not waited too long.
