disc not shown

I have a Toshiba hard drive (HDTB110EK3BA) that when connected to my iMac, doesn't show as a remote disc.  However the disc flashes blue, as though it is being read.

I've tried different USB ports.

It has a lot of content on it, from a different system.

I'm using macOS Sierra, version 10.12.6

Open Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and see if the drive can be seen. If it can, please use DU to Mount it.

If that does not work try a SMC (may take 2-3 attempts) and a PRAM reset per the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If the resets do not work, replace the USB cable with another cable and test.

Thanks so much for your prompt response.

Not quite sure what magic you have, but when I plugged the disk in this time, it was recognised.  I've tried countless times before, without success.  May be a faulty lead - I'll get a new one.
