Does Sharing really work across a LAN

I'm new to Wi-Fi (have used only ethernet until now) and am wondering if the System Preferences "Sharing" function really works across my LAN.  Right now, I only have the Printer Sharing box selected so that others across the LAN can print, but don't want anyone else seeing my files.  Does that really mean no one else on my LAN (ethernet or WiFi) can access any of the files on my Mac?

Just wondering if I need to set up Guest accounts on the Wi-Fi router (with their own login info), or if the Sharing function will do the trick.

Thanks.

It works across Ethernet or Wi-Fi in your local network. It must be enabled on only one of the computers - the one that is sharing - or all computers to exchange files between computers.

Guest accounts need to be set up to allow users whatever privileges are needed to obtain shared files. However, using File Sharing for unregistered guest users is not recommended since it allows anyone potential access to all of your data. Better to use the Shared folder and let guests use the standard Guest account that already exists.
