Adding a new email address to iMessage on Mac

I got married, so I needed to change my name. My primary email address is a gmail account, which doesn't allow you to change your address/user ID, so I created a new gmail in my new name and forwarded the old gmail to the new one. Eventually I will stop using the old one, so I added the new gmail to my iMessage settings on my iphone. Now, messages are no longer appearing on my Macbook Air, and when I tried to add the new email address on the Macbook air all it did was create a "Jabber" account that I really don't know what to do with. I now can't send and receive iMessages via the Macbook, only via the iphone. What did I do wrong and how do I fix it? Thanks
