External Hard drive . Not mounting on boot

Hello there, this is the first time I have ever had to ask to had a problem with any of my apple products.

I bought a new Imac27 this week and now when I connect my external raid system and also my external hard drive they do not show on my desktop on boot up. I have to go into disk utility and mount them manually. This has never happened before on my previous iMac's I wondered if there is something silly that I am missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Did you check Finder Preferences > General to make sure all external disks are selected to show?

Hi there , thank you for your reply. Yes I have checked this and both drives are ticked to show.

I had exactly the same problem with my external drives (WD 2TB) and my iMac after upgrading to Sierra 10.12.4…there are some posts about this problem on the Sierra forum, and the general consensus seems to be that it was a bug, the code line for auto-mounting external drives having been left out!?

But a simple solution that certainly worked for me was supplied by a German contributor, and involves using Terminal. Just to be on the safe side please do a full backup (Time Machine?) first!

Open Terminal and at the prompt type (you can copy & paste this command line!)

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool YES

Press Enter, quit Terminal and restart.

FWIW, the problem seems to have been corrected in the latest version of Sierra, macOS 10.12.5, as I haven´t had to resort to Terminal since. Hope this helps you! Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian~

I'm having the same problem. Brand new iMac. Trying to use Migration Assistant, but time machine on WD My Passport Ultra external hard drive will not mount nor show up in Disk Utility. The HD does mount perfectly on my MacBook Pro, so I know the drive isn't faulty.

Running on latest version of Sierra, macOS 10.12.6, so Apple hasn't fixed the problem from my point of view.

I've never used terminal before. When I opened terminal, and pasted the code you provided, it asked for a password and had a icon of a key after it. Does that mean that keychain added it? I can't seem to type anything else in. I'm not sure if I should just restart or do something else.
