iPod touch 6G.  Docking

I have a Kenwood-Garmin 9960 GPS audio system in my 2004 Chevy Tahoe.  When I installed it, I attached an iPod classic.  The 9960 actually came with a cable that connected to the iPod.

My wife bought me a 6th generation iPod Touch.  I tried to install it.

1) the 9960 has an iPod USB port.  Connecting the Touch to that port, however, has no sound.

2) the cable that came with the 9960 has a 1/8 inch jack that was used by the 30 pin connector for sound.

   - it went to a separate 1/8 inch built-in jack.

3) I do get sound when I connect a 1/8 inch-1/8 inch cable between the iPod Touch and the 9960....

however

4) I have to trick the iPod Touch into thinking I have head phones connected.

-----> Here is the problem.

5) when I turn the car off and then back on, everything works except the sound.

6) the message on the iPod Touch says I'm 'connected to a dock'.

7) when I remove the 1/8 jack from the Touch and let the sound come on through the speakers in the iPod, and

8) reconnect the 1/8 jack, the message says headphones and the sound comes back on the 9960.

for some reason, there is no sound in 'dock' mode with the 1/8 inch jack connected to the 9960.

I need to cheat it into thinking I have headphones installed.  It works in 'headphone' mode.

question 1)  is there a way to force it to stay in headphone mode?

- like I said, it reverts to 'dock' mode when I turn it off and back on.

question 2)  is there an iPod Touch docking cable that carries sound to the USB?

Note:  I'm not sure if the 9960 USB is connected to sound.

question 3)  is there an iPod Touch connector that includes a 1/8 inch jack to connect to the sound input on

- the 9960 that can be and let the iPod Touch operate in the 'connected to dock' mode with sound?

question 4). Does any of this make sense?

Hello AuCountry,

I think I might have some answers to your questions.

Answer 1: There isn't a way of forcing an iPod Touch to stay in a particular audio output mode as far as I know.

Answer 2/3/4: What you could try is a Lightning to 30-pin adaptor: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD823AM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter This will allow you to plug the 30-pin connector of the 9960 into this adaptor's 30-pin socket and plug the lightning end into the iPod. The adaptor should support audio as mentioned in the description.

I have one of these adaptors and have used it between a Lightning-port iPod Touch and an old 30-pin docking station, and it worked for both audio and charge.

I can't guarantee that this solution will work but it's worth a try.
