Forgotten ipad password (More complicated than ...

Haven't used my Ipad in 3-4 years so I have forgotten my password. I have followed the normal instructions to connect my ipad to my pc and open itunes then put my ipad into recovery mode by pressing the home button and wake button. On the instructions a notification should appear on the pc to either restore or update. But it says that it cannot interact with the Ipad because there is a passcode on the ipad and it needs to be unlocked first -_- . pls help

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

Read that section carefully.  You very likely need to hold the home and wake buttons longer than you did previously.
