Purging contacts from Mail and Messages

I use Mail to manage both gmail and iCloud mail accounts.  I would like to purge old, obsolete addresses from both.  If I hit the Compose New Mail button and type any letter on the To: line a list comes up.  There are numerous email addresses from emails long ago deleted (not archived).  How do I get rid of those?

Similar question for Messages.  I type any letter and a list of names I once upon a time sent a text message to.  Where are those cached?  I want to get rid of them.  I tried searching the ~Library folder and nothing came up.

Mail for Mac: Delete old email addresses in Mail

Let's start with your iCloud account. Any Apple devices that are configured to sync contacts to iCloud would "store" that contact information there. In theory, deleting a contact from the Contacts app on any of your devices would delete this contact from both your other devices and from iCloud. You can also access your iCloud contacts via a web browser by going to: www.icloud.com/#contacts.

Your Gmail contacts are NOT stored in iCloud and you would need to do something similar by directly accessing your Gmail account to purge contacts. The fact that you see them both in the Mail and Contacts apps is because they were configured in System Preferences > Internet Accounts > iCloud > Contacts & Gmail > Contacts.
