iPad Pro 10.5 screen randomly freezes

Brand new (obviously) iPad Pro 10.5.  It happens, very intermittently but it happens. It's like the touch screen is dead. Double-clicking the home button brings up the task list. You can then move to a different app. But then the screen is still dead.  Turning the screen off and on will reset things, so that the screen becomes live again.  Frustrating and not something I've ever seen before.  This is my fourth iPad.  Maybe it's defective?  Just wondering is it just me or do other people see this too.

Hi malum363!

I understand that the display on your iPad Pro intermittently becomes unresponsive, and I'm happy to help.  Please start by updating your iPad software if it is not already up to date.  Also refer to the second link below to see if there are any steps listed that you haven't tried.

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn‘t respond to touch

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Thanks for replying. Software is up to date.  So far, restart or reboot has not been necessary.  Simply recycling wake/sleep brings the screen back to life.  it's still very intermittent.

Looks like not a lot of people experience this.

Hi malum363!

Thanks for reviewing those articles.  If this issue continues, it would be best to contact Apple Support using this link:

I have the same problem.  It just locks up for abut 30 seconds and then you can scroll once again.  Software up to date, etc.  Not too sure what to do about it.

I have this issue as well -- more than a couple times.  Screen becomes unresponsive.  Only a sleep/wake recycle will fix.  Using iPad Pro 10.5 WiFi (256 GB) with iOS 10.3.2

It doesn't appear to be "frozen" however.  I can still double click the home button and go into multitasking mode -- but the screen will not respond to any touch or swipe gestures.

Seeing how I don't recall this ever happening with my prior iPad Pro 9.5, and on the same iOS version -- I hope it's not a hardware design issue.

BTW, I lost two HearthStone matches because of this.

I spoke to Apple Care this morning.  Not very helpful.  Told me to reset all settings and see what happens.  If it continues, they told me to go to my local Apple store and have them look at it.

I also have this problem. iPad Pro 10.5 512G with cellular. Screen randomly freezes for a few seconds then responds as normal. Happens in various apps and on the home app screens. Very annoying and disappointing for a device of this caliber and cost.

Seems as if Cook et al might have a problem with their new iPad Pro.  Lots of money to spend on something that doesn't always work as intended

Does your iPad have 512gb storage?  Mine does. Wondering whether that is a common denominator.

Interesting. Mine is also 512, with cellular.

Exactly my symptoms also.  Can double click home button. But otherwise the screen does not respond.

I don't have cellular, but mine has frozen twice since I reset all settings as advised by Apple Care.  I think I'll back it up tomorrow, go back to factory settings and see what happens.  If that doesn't correct the issue, time to visit the "Genius Bar" or whatever they call it these days, and tell them to fix the problem

Same here, 10.5 Pro, 256GB, WiFi & Cellular. Happened twice this week.

I'm also having the same problem--freezes periodically for about 30 seconds then its OK. I can hit the home button but nothing else is responsive. It's happened in different apps randomly. This is my third iPad and I never had the issue with the previous two devices. I also have the 512/wifi only. With this many reports there is obviously an issue--hopefully Apple will get it corrected quickly!
