Cursor disappears on restart
Cursor disappears on restart on new iMac. Have to totally remove power to get it back.
If it's a relatively new machine, the most likely culprit is a software conflict. I don't know what software or devices you use, but it's likely one of these.
In the meantime, you might find this helpful:

These links seem to apply to computers that have been out for awhile. This is a brand new (two weeks) imac desktop. No other software than what comes with it. Cursor is missing after every restart and only comes back after totally shutting down. Calling store has resulted in no help. They are too busy since we are out the door! Wondering if there is some setting that needs to be changed. Also using the wireless mouse, not the trackpad. Thanks
I agree with your general assessment...but coming up with a solution is more difficult.
I'm kind of confused about your question. If the cursor is missing after every restart, you shouldn't be able to use your computer at all. And it's hard to figure how the cursor reappears only after shutting down; when exactly does it reappear, and under what conditions?. If you have to "totally remove the power to get the cursor back", what power are you removing? An external drive? A powered external mouse?
Nothing external connected. After a restart, like after updating an ap or a program, no cursor. Also not there when selecting restart manually on the start up menu (under the apple symbol). Cursor only reappears after pushing and holding power button on back of mac. Again, unit is brand new. Memory should not be an issue. No external programs loaded. Thanks for giving this some thought.
Could you post an Entrecheck run? https://etrecheck.com/
You mentioned you have a new iMac. You might not know that you have access to free phone support - which is much faster and easier than the forums.
I have a similar issue on a late 2012 21.5" iMac running OS 10.11.6. Following each OS update restart, the cursor is missing, and I end up powering off (by holding the power button) on a "sharing information with developers" dialogue box and then restarting. When at this "sharing information with developers" dialogue box following an update restart, pressing keys on the keyboard (including Enter) and clicking the mouse (both Mac wireless peripherals) results in an invalid input sound, but, as mentioned, there is never a visible cursor. This only happens with a restart following an OS update and has been occurring at least since the Mavericks to Yosemite transition.
I too have a similar issue with my iMac. Running the latest versions of apple ONLY software.
My cursor only disappears after sign in, but random times, not each time I sign in.
I have found that if I hit the F3 button, my cursor will appear.
Hit it the second time and never another issue until after sign in again.
Hope this helps.
A permanent fix would be better for sure.
